South Crofty is a tin and copper mine in Pool, Cornwall.

Tin mining has a 4000 year old history in Cornwall and mining at South Crofty can be traced back to 1592, so the earliest level dates back to the Elizabethan era. By the time it closed in March 1998, the mine had reached a depth of 400 fathoms which is nearly half a mile underground.

Originally, nearer the surface, copper was the main extraction and this was the case until 1880 when the reserves were exhausted.

Tin then became the principal commodity until the price crash of 1985. However, the price of tin has increased recently and as it is now a material that is critical to energy transition, it is hoped that tin mining might once again return to Cornwall. A company called Cornish Metals is working towards reopening South Crofty as it produces some of the worlds highest grade tin.
