Jon Pilkington x Maude Weatherall Pilkington — The tut of a brake

£6.70

36 pages
printed in England
staple bound
14cm x 20cm

Published on the occasion of The Tut of a brake (Unbreakable bond) at Hanover Project, University of Lancashire, Preston.

The exhibition draws on Jon Pilkington’s experience of early fatherhood in Copenhagen and how it radically altered his studio practice. Stepping away from relentless deadlines and familiar habits, Pilkington found a renewed instinct to learn and unlearn through time spent with his three-year-old daughter, Maude, watching her approach drawing and painting with effortless freedom.

Pilkington stripped past motifs into simplified linear drawings for Maude to deface, respond to, and make beautiful, before using these foundational drawings as starting points for a series of large-scale paintings shown together at Hanover Project, and in this book for the first time. The surfaces conceal and reveal their own histories: accidental gestures, corrections, and underlying marks.

Shown alongside the paintings are two accompanying publications published by CRB: Studio on the go (A nod to Mo) and The Tut of a brake (Unbreakable bond). Together, the exhibition and books examine the temporal nature of works on paper, the tension between authorship and interpretation, and a creative ground where parental observation meets collaborative mark-making.

Studio on the go (A nod to Mo), will be released at the exhibition and available here after that date.

The exhibition Preview is Thursday November 12th 2026, 5pm. Following a Q&A with Craig Atkinson from 3pm. Hanover Project.

This book isn’t included in subscriptions.
