Maggie Murray — Mildmay Road, Newington Green, N1 1970–1990
36 pages
printed in England
staple bound
14cm x 20cm
Newington Green is in the Mildmay Ward of the Borough of Islington, North London.
Its history encompasses Henry VIII, who had a hunting lodge in the locality, and Mary Wollstonecraft, the 18th century feminist philosopher who set up a radical school there.
In Victorian times the area developed as a residential community, but by the mid-20th century it had become neglected and run down. In the early 1970s it was designated a Housing Action Area. This gave access to improvement grants and a housing association that rehabilitated homes to rent to local people.
Maggie Murray was a documentary photographer. She was a founder member of Format Photographers which, uniquely, represented only women photographers. They had premises in Islington at the Angel. Maggie lived in Mildmay Road for 50 years from 1970.
My thanks to all the Mildmay residents who co-operated and welcomed me over the years. It was a great place to live.
